Abstract

This writing addresses the issue of understanding the concept of Ahlul Kitab in the Quran amid contemporary religious pluralism, where traditional interpretations are often exclusive and lack contextual depth, necessitating a progressive approach to promote tolerance and interfaith dialogue. The purpose is to analyze the concept of Ahlul Kitab according to Abdullah Saeed's interpretation, which emphasizes historical context and universal ethical values, as well as its relevance to modern issues such as justice, cooperation, and inclusivity. The methods employed include data collection from primary sources (Saeed's works) and secondary sources (literature on Ahlul Kitab and contextual interpretation), analyzed using Saeed's hierarchy of values theory to explore the concept's application in historical and contemporary contexts. The results indicate that Saeed expands the definition of Ahlul Kitab beyond Jews and Christians, highlighting principles like religious freedom, dialogue, and cross-faith collaboration, while critiquing traditional exclusivism through Meccan-Medinan contexts. The main conclusion is that Saeed's contextual approach reduces misunderstandings of Quranic texts, enabling a more inclusive application of the Ahlul Kitab concept in social, political, and global spheres, and encouraging further research for advancing tolerance based on Islamic ethics.
