Abstract

Young people seek to enjoyment and relaxation. Music is a kind of entertainment that is widely popular among youngsters. Some of the young generation admires a musician due to his or her song lyrics. They feel connected and find solace through listening the musician’s songs. Bangtan Sonyeondan or famously known as BTS are currently the world’s biggest boyband. Their fans are called ARMY which stands for Adorable Representative MC for Youth. BTS and ARMY communicate their messages through social media. Therefore, the fans follow suit whatever BTS creates because they feel close to them. The research aims to identify the perceptions of love and freedom in BTS music. This study is based on parasocial theory. The research problems are whether BTS Army in Indonesia have distinct perception of BTS song lyrics related to love and freedom and whether parasocial relations play a role in shaping their perceptions. This research employs a qualitative methodology. The method of the study is a focused-group discussion. Data are collected by implementing in-depth interviews with a community of BTS Army in Indonesia. Besides, we gather data through observation and literature study. The results of the research are: there is different perception of love and freedom in BTS music and there is evidence that parasocial relations are significant factors on how ARMY perceive the lyrics. The results contribute and implicate to enriching pop culture and forming knowledge of healthy relationship with favorite artists
