Abstract
This paper is focused on the practice of collecting and investing paintings, and its correlation with motivation and orientation, as well as the position s of pure collector in Indonesia’s art world. The subject of this research is DR. Oei Hong Djien (OHD), a great pure collector of paintings located in Magelang. The practice of collecting and investing is a whole activity that involves a lot of components in the art world : artist, curator, critic, and the public. Currently collecting and investing cannot be separated, it always has relations. This paper aims to explore practice of collecting and investing paintings by OHD, describes the motivation and orientation, and identify his point of views about paintings, furthermore is to describe the role of OHD in Indonesia’s art world, which is embodied in his museum infrastructure. As a pure collector, OHD is more appreciative on art values, than on economic values in investing paintings. Key words: pure collector, collecting, investing, art world
